Education for a Personal Trainer outside of a certification is what will determine how difficult any uphill climb is.
It is rare to find a Personal Trainer who has just recently earned a degree or Personal Training certification that is starting a Personal Training business of his or her own immediately.
For many, it is advantageous to "learn the ropes" and establish a solid client base before venturing out on their own.
The health club setting can be an excellent place to polish your Personal Trainer job skills. Here are a few reasons why:
- The members come to you
- You will have mentors to learn from
- You are paid for shift hours and Personal Training hours
- You are covered by the company's insurance
- There is the possibility of career advancement
We will cover each of these topics in detail over the next few pages.
Health Club Memberships
Today's large health club chains generate most of their revenues from monthly membership fees.
The locations that I've Personally Trained at have always had a membership base of at least 1,000 people ranging up to 13,000 members.
Each of these gyms employed a minimum of 6 Personal Trainers and a high number of 60.
IMPORTANT: You might be wondering about competition among Personal Trainers.
Here's the scoop...
My Personal Training business has always been more successful at the health clubs that employ larger numbers of successful Personal Trainers. I thrive on competition.
Imagine going to a gym where there was only 1 successful Personal Trainer.
He or she can only work with so many people.
At some point that Personal Trainer will run out of hours (or half hours) in the day to spend time one-on-one with clients.
So, what happens to the members of the gym?
Most of the time, if there is not another up-and-coming Personal Trainer, that member who could benefit greatly from the advice and supervision of a coach is left to their own devices.
Eventually, the members that we are not in contact with quit their gym memberships for one reason or another.
Now, if that same gym is full of PASSIONATE and PERSONABLE Personal Trainers, more of the members will be provided with the exceptional customer service that they deserve and will at some point benefit from Personal Training.
More Education for a Personal Trainer
I used to spend parts of my days Personally Training at a large health club. There were 15 Personal Trainers and 4 Master Personal Trainers.
When members walked into our health club and saw so many Personal Trainers and so many other fitness enthusiasts working with our fitness staff and getting results, they realized that this is where people come to train!
The more highly educated, passionate, and inspirational Personal Trainers you have around, the better your chances are of success.
