That's not an awful thing. It's still a start.

Many fitness magazines still tend to push the old-fashioned "body-building workout".

Are you a body-builder?

Probably not -- at least not in the competitive sense of the word.

Like most people, you want to build your body to be healthy, injury-free, and sure, even good-looking in the mirror.

So, why don't those fitness magazine exercise routines work?

They might work for some people, but they weren't designed with you and your body and your needs in mind.

To help you realize the fit and toned body that you imagine when you close your eyes, here are our top suggestions, workout routines, and exercise strategies.

The most effective weight loss programs should be...

1) Comprehensive - Too often fitness programs focus on only one component of physical fitness. To experience the greatest benefit you will have to address your cardiovascular fitness program, your weight training program, your mobility and stretching exercises, as well as getting the best nutritional value possible.

2) Convenient - Gone are the days of having to spend 2 hours per day in the gym. With work and family life, it can be hard enough to "find the time", not that that means you can make excuses. It just means you have to be smarter about your time. Our favorite workout program that fits this category is Dave Gleason's 10-minute video workouts.

3) Challenging - If you've been cleared for exercise by your doctor and your fitness routine isn't getting your heartrate up and asking you to work harder than you normally do, then you're probably wasting your time. Too many people spend hours at the gym without working out at the right intensities -- and with the wrong exercises. To experience the greatest benefit, you'll NEED to get your heart rate up using compound and integrated exercise movements. Josh Carter's 100 rep fitness routine is the most fun and most challenging 6-week fitness routines we've tried in years.

4) Include Nutrition - A healthy eating program must be a staple of your daily routine if you are serious about reaching the goals you've set for yourself. You might have 1 hour in the gym, but there are 23 more hours in the day to put the wrong foods in your body, negating all your hard work.

5) Fun - If it isn't fun, you won't look forward to it. If you're not looking forward to it, you're probably going to try to figure out a way to skip it. Does that sound familiar? It's true that some of the most basic exercises yield the best results, but that doesn't mean you have to stand in place and just do bicep curls. Make sure your fitness program is fun and interactive so that you'll look forward to your time in the gym.

6) Progressive - If you ran the same distance every day for the rest of your life, that's all you'd be good at -- nothing else. Just as you'll switch the exercises in your fat burning workout program over the course of the year, so should you switch these variables: the load (how much weight you are lifting), the sets and repetitions (how many times you are lifting the weight), and your rest periods (how much time you give yourself in between exercises). If you are not doing this, you're setting yourself up to look the same forever.

7) Easily Accessible - This is closely related to the convenience factor. If you had all the tools necessary to create a great workout in your own home or office, how much time and money would you save? Tons probably. This is my personal trainer gym bag. It holds everything I need for my training and for "torturing" my clients.

8) Consistent - Your results are only as good as your last workout. If you are skipping fitness training sessions, you are creating an uphill climb. How consistent have you been? Do you go to the gym once each week or once every other week? More? Less? Tell yourself the truth. If you went to the gym 4 times each week, you could have 200 great workouts this year (that's with giving yourself 2 weeks off for vacation and/or sick leave). Did you workout 200 times last year? Be consistent.

9) Motivating - It can be tough to shoot for the stars all the time, especially if you don't have the support of family, friends, and a great fitness program. It's important to remember that Personal Trainers don't just count repetitions. We are there to help you break through the barriers and plateaus that inevitably come up for everyone.
