The NASM workshop is both education and application.
Having spent just about 3 months studying for the personal trainer exam, this 2-day seminar was a welcome break from the textbooks.
It was a great way for a group of aspiring personal trainers to get together and share our thoughts and information in a guided classroom format.
Day #1 was largely dedicated to reviewing and ironing out the finer points of the OPT model and discussing the differences between its stages.
We were also able to review several types of postural imbalances, what creates them, and the joints and musculature involved.
On Day #2 we had the opportunity to design a workout based on a section of the OPT model and then to take one of our fellow classmates through our program design.
This was the applied part of the coursework. When studying for such an examination on your own, it's easy to miss out on the "personal" part of the job.
What's scary, too, is that a good number of Personal Trainers may have some book knowledge after passing their exams, but leave the door open to injuring their clients if they have not had proper instruction on live training technique.
If you feel you're in this position and are beginning a Personal Training job, make sure that your supervisor or fitness director knows of your concerns.
He or she will be able to guide you and give you proper on the job training to make you a safer and more effective Personal Trainer for your clients.
Day #2 was a great way to clarify portions of fitness program design and to get feedback from another health professional and the instructor on our personal training workout presentations.
