"Personal Trainer Jobs"Personal Trainer Jobs: The Personal Training StudioPersonal Trainer Jobs: Not everyone starts their career in the health club setting. The other major option to consider is life at a Personal Trainer studio. I've seen many Personal Trainers start their Personal Trainer jobs in one setting and then switch to the other. Over the course of the next few pages, we'll examine what you need to know so that you don't find yourself "wasting time" at one that may not be the best fit. Studio SetupA Personal Trainer Studio is normally organized as a small health club with either one large room shared by 3-5 Personal Trainers per shift or with individual Personal Training areas suitable for one Personal Trainer and 1-2 clients. This structure allows for a more "personal" environment, fewer distractions, and decreased competition from other Personal Trainers at your facility. EmployeesAt most health clubs, you will find a General Manager, an Assistant General Manager, a Fitness Manager, an Assistant Fitness Manager, 10-50 Personal Trainers, and up to 100 other employees. At most Personal Trainer studios you will find an Owner, a General Manager, and 3-10 Personal Trainers. Generally, the owners main function is to be the face of the business. He or she creates a network within the community, builds contacts, and "walks" people to the door of the Personal Trainer studio. The General Manager then takes over. He or she is responsible for providing a needs analysis, an introduction to the facility, and presentation of the membership options and attached Personal Training options. The Personal Trainers are solely responsible for exceptional customer service, fitness program design, and obtaining consistent results for their clients. Unless the Personal Trainer desires a position as a General Manager, there is much less of a need to be knowledgeable of sales techniques. MentorshipIn this setting, as in the health club, there is also the opportunity for continued education. Although there are fewer employees to learn from, the "teacher:student" ratio is much more favorable. Your mentor will be able to take you through initial consultations, program design, training variables, periodization, and more.
