"An Interview with Personal Trainer Mike Alves"Meet Personal Trainer Mike AlvesMy Personal Trainer School would like to thank Personal Trainer Mike Alves for taking the time to sit with us to answer some questions for you, our readers and aspiring fitness professionals. We are looking forward to many future contributions from Personal Trainer Mike Alves. Enjoy the interview.
MPTS: What was your first introduction to fitness as a child and then as a career choice? Mike Alves (MA): My first introduction to fitness as a child were team sports from the age of 5 through high school, push up and sit up contests with friends starting in middle school, a weider home gym when I was a freshman in high school, attending a sports science college and the desire to transform from skinny to big. My first introduction to fitness as a career choice was when I had a chance to move to Boston and live with some high school friends. I needed a job and the first job I found was personal training. It was fun, I was good at it and the rest is living history. MPTS: Describe your typical day as a health and fitness professional? MA: Put my clothes out for tomorrow, pack my gym bag, make my lunch, force myself to go to bed (its a challenge to wind down) get up before the rooster, eat b-fast, show up in time to see my first client(s), go full throttle until lunch. Take out my giant lunch bag that everyone teases me about. Sit at a desk, eat, check e-mail, return phone calls, schedule sessions and just rest & regroup for the second half. The kick some more butt, change clothes quickly, eat a snack, bang out my workout, head home, make dinner & lunch, eat, rest, write programs, check e-mail, shower, pack my bag for tomorrow, get my clothes ready, read & crash. MPTS: Was this always the case? MA: Hell no! I’m a reformed partier, late night talk show junkie, wild man & a dude who would burn the candles at both ends. MPTS: Who have been the most influential people in shaping your career in fitness? MA: Chris Correnti, Bob Otrando, Mike Boyle, Bret Cichaski, Alwyn Cosgrove, Mark Verstegen, Tom Halton and all of my clients. MPTS: It sounds cliché, but, what do you know now that you wish you knew way back when? MA: To spend the loot and go to the good conferences, buy the products I wanted, network more with like minded people, keep learning & not think I know everything. MPTS: What project are you working on now that you are most excited about? MA: Systems to guarantee results, semi-private group personal training, reading an hour a day & writing an hour a day. MPTS: Any other words of wisdom for our readers? MA: If you want a career in fitness it has to be your life & your lifestyle. It is who you are. If not, forget about it. You won’t make it.
