Introduction to Personal Training Jobs: The Health Club vs. The Studio

With a number of Personal Training Jobs out there, where do you start? It's been our experience that many Personal Trainers begin their careers working at either a health club or at a Personal Training Studio.

My career began as a part-time Personal Trainer at a health club and I wouldn't trade the knowledge that I've gained from following this path. However, that is not to say that I haven't seen some extremely successful Personal Trainers follow completely different paths. Although, there was one key element...passion.

You may have aspirations of starting your own Personal Training business someday, whether it is in-home, a studio, a franchise, or something completely different. IMPORTANT: Don't let go of those dreams. That possibility will still be there after you've spent some valuable time in the trenches.

Choosing Between the Two

I have seen Personal Trainers create extremely successful businesses for themselves as employees at large health club chains and at Personal Training studios. Each path holds different pros and cons, but I think that everyone can find their niche or calling.

The intent of Chapter#3 in the "My Personal Trainer School" guide is to take a close look at the first of these options so that you can "kick the tires" before you make your own, well-informed decision. We will explore studio-based Personal Training in a later chapter.
