Treadmill Workouts

by AJ
(Kansas City, MO, USA)

I am a 32 year old Male. I am 5 ft 5 inches and I weigh 185 pounds. I am not grossly overweight, however, my stomach is fatter than what I like. I started exercising again about 2 weeks ago. I have jogged on and off all my life and it is my favorite exercise besides the bench press. My goal in the gym is to loose weight. I now jog regularly on the treadmill (5-6 times a week). I jog at the speed of 5 and I am up to 3 miles every time I jog. I am comfortable with the 3 miles now and I want to bump it up a notch or two. Should I increase my speed to 5.5 or 6 and continue to run the 3 miles or remain at the 5 speed and add more miles to my run? Which option would help me loose weight the fastest? My current 3 mile run lasts for about 40 minutes.

Thanks,

Trying to loose for summer

Treadmill Workout
by: David Bohmiller

Hi,

Excellent question and congrats on sticking with a consistent program.

The short answer is to increase the intensity of your treadmill workout rather than the overall time.

This means that you'll want to adjust your cardiovascular exercise using the Karvonnen formula for your Target Heart Rate Zone.

Adding more miles can be effective, but my thoughts would be that you'd see greater benefit by dedicating that time to your weight training exercises and a sound nutrition program.

Congrats again and thanks for your question!

In health,
